Clinical Medical Assistants are the hands-on side of the healthcare team. Where a comprehensive Medical Assistant program covers both clinical and administrative skills, the Clinical Medical Assistant program focuses on one thing: the clinical work itself.

At MHCC, our Clinical Medical Assistant program is built for students who only want to pursue patient-facing, clinical care — without the administrative coursework. The same clinical skills and competencies taught in our comprehensive Medical Assistant class, delivered in a format designed exclusively around what happens in the exam room.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this program, the student will possess the knowledge and clinical skills necessary to perform both back-office and patient-facing clinical duties in an ambulatory care setting. The program focuses on hands-on clinical competency, progressive skill development across six structured modules, and preparation for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) examination offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Graduates are prepared for entry-level clinical positions in physician offices, multi-specialty clinics, and outpatient healthcare facilities.

Program Details

Class Structure

The Clinical Medical Assistant class takes approximately 5 months to complete. This consists of 6 didactic modules to teach clinical theory and demonstrate clinical skills and 1 externship module where you will apply your learning in a practicing medical facility. Each didactic module is 60 hours and externship is 80 hours for a total of 440 hours.

Schedule

The schedule for the Clinical Medical Assistant Program is Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM - 4 hours per day, 5 days per week. Externship hours are determined by the host facility but are generally Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

Instructional Method

This class is taught in a hybrid format. Class sessions held on Monday through Thursday are conducted in a live video chat session, and classes on Fridays are held in-person at our site in Gardena, CA.

Admissions Requirements

General Requirements

All students must meet the following general requirements.

a) Students are required to be at least 18 years of age.

b) All classes are taught in English. Students must be able to read, speak and write in English at least at a high-school level.

c) The purpose of this program is to support the vocational, career objectives of our students. Students must be able to legally work in the United States.

d) Students must submit a copy of a picture ID (state driver’s license or an identification card is acceptable).

High-School Diploma / GED

A high-school diploma or GED is not required for the Clinical Medical Assistant Program.

Proof of Verbal and Quantitative Competency

Applicants to MHCC must show proof that he/she possesses a required minimum competency in verbal and quantitative skills to be successful in the program. This is established by completing the WONDERLIC BASIC SKILLS TEST (WBST), a standardized test recognized and approved by the United States Department of Education to measure basic reading and arithmetic skills. Minimum passing scores accepted by MHCC for all students is 175 for the verbal section and 175 for the quantitative section. This test must be completed on campus under the supervision of an admissions representative.

Medical Requirements

VACCINES: Medical facilities also generally require that workers and externs are vaccinated against certain highly communicable viruses. MHCC requires proof of vaccination (yellow vaccine card) or proof of immunity by way of lab result titers for Hepatitis B, Varicella, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella at the time of enrollment to facilitate placement into an externship site.

NEGATIVE TB/PPD SCREENING: Students enrolling into any of our on-campus programs must show clearance of tuberculosis (TB) by providing official documentation from a medical care provider indicating negative TB/PPD blood test or Mantoux skin test results. The results can be dated up to 30 days prior to the first class session but must be presented at most seven days after enrollment or by the first class session, whichever is later.

Distance Learning Readiness Assessment

Applicants enrolling in a distance education or hybrid program, must complete the “Distance Learning Readiness Assessment” to determine the student's preparedness for succeeding in a distance learning instructional environment.

Technology Requirements - Bring Your Own Device

Applicants must have and be able to bring to class a laptop computer or tablet device capable of supporting the web-based technology programs utilized in the program’s daily coursework. Macintosh and PC devices are recommended. Google Chromebooks are not compatible with some programs. Speak with an admissions counselor to review the specifications of your device to ensure it is acceptable.

Students must have access to a high-speed internet connection at the location from which they plan to attend classes remotely.

Differences Between Medical Assistant and Clinical Medical Assistant Programs

INSTRUCTIONAL FORMAT

Clinical Medical Assistant: Hybrid format - Online Monday through Thursday, in-person on Fridays.

Medical Assistant: Two class sessions are available. We offer an in-person session and a hybrid session.

PROGRAM LENGTH

Clinical Medical Assistant: 440 hours, Approximately 5 months.

Medical Assistant - In-Person: 720 hours, Approximately 6 months.

Medical Assistant - Hybrid: 720 hours, Approximately 8 months.

SCHEDULE

Clinical Medical Assistant: Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Four days per week are online. One day per week is in-person.

Medical Assistant - In-Person: Monday through Thursday from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM.

Medical Assistant - Hybrid: Monday through Friday from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM. Three days per week are online. Two days per week are in-person.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Clinical Medical Assistant: The Clinical Medical Assistant program is designed to develop proficiency in the full scope of clinical patient care, including patient intake, vital signs, specimen collection, clinical procedures, and provider support.

Medical Assistant: The Medical Assistant program prepares students for a dual role in both clinical and administrative healthcare functions, encompassing clinical patient care alongside medical records management, scheduling, billing fundamentals, and front-office operations.

CAREER OUTCOMES

Clinical Medical Assistant: Graduates of the Clinical Medical Assistant program are prepared to pursue roles in clinical support across primary care offices, specialty practices, urgent care centers, and other patient-facing healthcare environments where clinical proficiency is the primary requirement.

Medical Assistant: Graduates of the Medical Assistant program are prepared to pursue roles across the full spectrum of medical office operations, qualifying them for positions that require both clinical and administrative competency — making them versatile candidates in virtually any outpatient healthcare setting.

Licensure & Certification

Medical assisting is not a licensed healthcare profession, such as Registered Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or Certified Phlebotomy Technician. As such, there is no license application that you must complete.

Graduates of our program receive a Certificate of Completion, but they have not received a "Certification" or a "Certified" status. To accomplish this, you will need to pass a certification exam. Graduates of MHCC are able to sit for an exam with the following certifying agency:

PROGRAM COST:

The full cost of the Clinical Medical Assistant Program is $4,750.

WHAT IS INCLUDED:

Upon enrollment MHCC will provide to you with the following:

One scrub set,
A stethoscope,
A sphygmomanometer to take blood pressure,
All required E-books and digital licenses (electronic format),

All other supplies and equipment used in the clinical practicum, and
Training to become certified in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association.
One attempt at the NHA CMA exam.

WHAT IS NOT INCLUDED:

Students are expected to provide their own electronic device (i.e. computer) to attend virtual class sessions and to bring to class as needed.

Upfront Payment - $4,500

Students can save $250 off of our regular tuition price by paying $4,500 at the time of enrollment. No other fees or charges will be assessed. Payment is made directly to MHCC.

15-Month Payment Plan - $4,750
