Learning Objectives (Both Programs)

Upon completion of this program the student will possess the knowledge and skills necessary for successful transition into an entry-level position as a Medical Assistant, Medical Lab Assistant, or Medical Administrative Assistant. Students are trained in both administrative (front office) and clinical (back office) medical procedures that can be used in clinics, hospitals, or physician offices.

In-Person vs. Hybrid

In-Person Program

Class Structure

The in-person Medical Assistant class spans approximately 6 months. This consists of 4 didactic modules to explain administrative and clinical theory and demonstrate skills and 1 externship module where you will apply your learning in a practicing medical facility. Each didactic module is 140 hours and externship is 160 hours for a total of 720 hours.

Schedule

The schedule for the in-person program is Monday through Thursday from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM - 7 hours per day, 4 days per week. Externship hours are determined by the host facility but are generally Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

Instructional Method

This class is taught 100% in-person.

Hybrid Program

Class Structure

The hybrid Medical Assistant class spans approximately 8 months. This consists of 7 didactic modules to explain administrative and clinical theory and demonstrate skills and 1 externship module where you will apply your learning in a practicing medical facility. Each didactic module is 80 hours and externship is 160 hours for a total of 720 hours.

Schedule

The schedule for the hybrid program is Monday through Friday from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM - 4 hours per day, 5 days per week. Externship hours are determined by the host facility but are generally Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM.

Instructional Method

The hybrid class is a mix of in-person and on-line learning. Students must report to class 2 days per week for clinical training, and they are able to attend class lecture via video chat from home or other remote location 3 days per week. Note that the days for in-person or hybrid attendance do vary. Students may be required to be present in-person on a Monday and Wednesday during some modules, or this could change to other days, such as Tuesday and Friday.

Admissions Requirements

General Requirements

All students must meet the following general requirements.

a) Students are required to be at least 18 years of age.

b) All classes are taught in English. Students must be able to read, speak and write in English at least at a high-school level.

c) The purpose of this program is to support the vocational, career objectives of our students. Students must be able to legally work in the United States.

d) Students must submit a copy of a picture ID (state driver’s license or an identification card is acceptable).

High-School Diploma / GED

A high-school diploma or GED is not required for the Medical Assistant Program.

Proof of Verbal and Quantitative Competency

Applicants to MHCC must show proof that he/she possesses a required minimum competency in verbal and quantitative skills to be successful in the program. This is established by completing the WONDERLIC BASIC SKILLS TEST (WBST), a standardized test recognized and approved by the United States Department of Education to measure basic reading and arithmetic skills.  Minimum passing scores accepted by MHCC for all students is 175 for the verbal section and 175 for the quantitative section. The test can be completed on campus or we can email you a link to take the test from home.

Medical Requirements

VACCINES: Medical facilities also generally require that workers and externs are vaccinated against certain highly communicable viruses. MHCC requires proof of vaccination (yellow vaccine card) or proof of immunity by way of lab result titers for Hepatitis B, Varicella, Measles, Mumps, and Rubella at the time of enrollment to facilitate placement into an externship site.

NEGATIVE TB/PPD SCREENING: Students enrolling into any of our on-campus programs must show clearance of tuberculosis (TB) by providing official documentation from a medical care provider indicating negative TB/PPD Mantoux skin test results.  The results can be dated up to 30 days prior to the first class session but must be presented at most seven days after enrollment or by the first class session, whichever is later.  

Distance Learning Readiness Assessment (Hybrid Only)

Applicants enrolling in a distance education or hybrid program, must complete the “Distance Learning Readiness Assessment” to determine preparedness for succeeding in a distance learning instructional environment.

Technology Requirements - Bring Your Own Device (Hybrid Only)

Applicants must have and be able to bring to class a laptop computer or tablet device capable of supporting the web-based technology programs utilized in the program’s daily coursework. Macintosh and PC devices are recommended. Google Chromebooks are not compatible with some programs. Speak with an admissions counselor to review the specifications of your device to ensure it is acceptable.

Students must have access to a high-speed internet connection at the location from which they plan to attend classes remotely.

Licensure & Certification

Medical assisting is not a licensed healthcare profession, such as Registered Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, or Certified Phlebotomy Technician. As such, there is no license application that you must complete.

Graduates of our program receive a Certificate of Completion, but they have not received a "Certification" or a "Certified" status. To accomplish this, you will have to pass a certification exam. Graduates of MHCC are able to sit for exams with the following certifying agencies:

  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

  • National Healthcareer Association (NHA)

  • California Certifying Board for Medical Assistants (CCBMA)

Fees & Payment Options

PROGRAM COST:

The full cost of the Medical Assistant Program, for either in-person or hybrid, is $7,500.

WHAT IS INCLUDED:

Everything required for the course is included in the tuition with one exception. Hybrid MA students are required to provide their own electronic device according to the technology requirements listed in the Admissions Requirements dropdown above.

Upon enrollment MHCC will provide to you with the following:

  • One scrub set,

  • One T-shirt,

  • A stethoscope,

  • A sphygmomanometer to take blood pressure,

  • All required study guides and textbooks (hardcopy for in-person, electronic for hybrid),

  • All other supplies and equipment used in the clinical practicum, and

  • Training to become certified in Basic Life Support through the American Heart Association.

Upfront Payment

Students can save $1,500 off of our regular tuition price by paying $6,000 at the time of enrollment. No other fees or charges will be assessed.

20-Month Payment Plan

Pay for your tuition over time with a Payment Plan.  This option offers easy-to-manage payments without interest or administrative fees. Pay a $250 registration fee at the time of enrollment, then pay the remaining balance in equal installments over 20 months starting in your first month of enrollment. All applicants qualify.

36 or 60-Month Extended Loans

Ascent Financing offers students various payment terms and various repayment options. Interest and administrative fees will be assessed. Interest rate is based on the borrower's credit score. Co-borrowers are welcome. Not all applicants will qualify.

Qualifying applicants will pay a $250 registration fee at the time of enrollment, then pay the remaining balance over a

  • 36-month loan term, or a

  • 60-month loan term.

Qualifying applicants will be able to choose their repayment plan. These include the following options:

  • Pay interest and principal beginning in the first month of enrollment;

  • Pay interest only for the term of enrollment plus 3 months (11 months for hybrid, 9 months for in-person), then paying interest and principal beginning in the subsequent month through the remainder of the loan; or

  • Totally defer all payments for the term of enrollment plus 3 months (11 months for hybrid, 9 months for in-person), then paying interest and principal beginning in the subsequent month through the remainder of the loan.

42-Month Extended Loan

Similar to Ascent, Climb Credit provides qualifying students with longer term payment plans to fund their education. Options, however, are more limited. Like Ascent, interest and administrative fees will be assessed. Interest rate is based on the borrower's credit score. Co-borrowers are welcome. Not all applicants will qualify.

Qualifying applicants will pay a $250 registration fee at the time of enrollment, then pay the remaining balance over a

  • 42-month loan term.

Qualifying applicants will be able to choose their repayment plan. These include the following options:

  • Pay interest and principal beginning in the first month of enrollment; or

  • Pay interest only for the term of enrollment plus 3 months (11 months for hybrid, 9 months for in-person), then pay interest and principal beginning in the subsequent month through the remainder of the loan.
